The Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 8164/S. 4206) would prohibit the private possession of nonhuman primates in the US.
US Captive Primate Safety Act
The Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 8164/S. 4206) was reintroduced to the US House of Representatives in May 2025. It would prohibit the private possession of nonhuman primates in the US. This prohibition is narrowly focused on pet primates and exempts zoos, research labs, sanctuaries, and universities. Current owners are grandfathered in and are simply required to register their animals. Learn more and take action here.
Research estimates there are more than 15,000 other primates such as capuchins, spider monkeys and lemurs living as pets or as “actors,” for instance, in the entertainment industry today. Read more here.
