At Fauna Foundation, we sometimes receive inquiries from caring individuals interested in physically adopting a chimpanzee or monkey, as in taking one home. We believe it's essential to address why having a chimpanzee or monkey in your home is a bad idea. Conversely we offer a symbolic adoption program and some inquiries go in the opposite direction, people think we are adopting chimpanzees and monkey out like an animal shelter and placing our residents in someone’s home. Our Adopt-a-Chimp program is a sponsorship and no one goes anywhere. In this blog, we'll explore the reasons why taking a chimp or monkey home is not suitable and the meaningful impact you can make through symbolic adoption at Fauna Foundation.
As many of you know the Fauna Foundation, is a sanctuary dedicated to the rehabilitation and well-being of chimpanzees, monkeys, and farm animals. At Fauna, we believe in providing a permanent, safe, and enriched environment for our beloved residents, allowing them to heal, thrive, and experience the quality of life they so greatly deserve. Why Private Ownership of Primates is a Terrible Idea

Chimpanzees and other non-human primates are not suitable as pets and are highly complex and intelligent beings with specific needs that cannot be met in a home setting. Keeping a chimpanzee or non-human primate as a pet can lead to physical and emotional harm for both humans and nonhumans.
Chimpanzees are considered “wild” animals with natural behaviors and social structures that cannot be replicated in a human home environment. The challenges of caring for a chimp or monkey are immense and include specialized housing, dietary requirements, medical care, and the need for interaction with their own species. Furthermore, many places have strict laws against keeping chimpanzees or monkeys as pets due to the risks they pose to public safety and the ethical concerns surrounding wildlife exploitation.

When you choose to symbolically adopt a chimp through our Adopt-a-Chimp program, you will receive a link to download a photo of your chimpanzee or monkey and their biography. We encourage you to sign up for our e-news so you will get updates about all of the Fauna residents right to your inbox. Meanwhile your contribution will directly support the well-being and care of the chosen chimpanzee or monkey. Your donations go towards providing nutritious food, specialized medical care, medicine, and a safe and stimulating environment tailored to their needs. Our staff have years of experience and expertise to provide the appropriate, safe, and compassionate care that our residents require. We also consult with our NAPSA members when we have questions.
