Sanctuary Symposiums

Experience our ever‑popular Sanctuary Symposiums

Sanctuary Symposiums are educational tours held at Fauna in the spring and summer months. The 2-hour symposium event includes an informational session about Fauna and our residents, activities, and an outdoor tour of the property. Symposiums are offered in English or French.

COVID-19 Notice: Please note that we have cancelled Fauna Sanctuary Symposiums and Birdwatching events until further notice. We remain watchful of the COVID-19 situation. We hope to resume our event programs and announce new dates for the 2022 season soon.

What To Expect - The Agenda

Fauna Foundation Sanctuary Symposiums

All Sanctuary Symposiums are from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. We recommend you arrive 15 minutes in advance to check in with our Fauna staff. The event will take place whether rain or shine. If raining, be sure to wear water resistant footwear (preferably rainboots) and a rain jacket. If sunny, we recommend you bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellant.

This 2-hour symposium begins at 10:00 AM with a presentation about the Fauna Foundation and our many residents. It includes the natural history of some of our residents and general sanctuary etiquette.

We will walk around the Fauna property which is outside, so be prepared for all types of weather. Guests should expect to walk for approximately 30-45 minutes. The walk includes places around the Chimp House and Monkey House but not inside. The chimpanzees and monkeys are free to come to outside enclosures to visit guests passing by, but it is ultimately their choice. Guests should understand this symposium is focused on learning about, rather than seeing, our residents. This is a working Sanctuary and our residents’ needs are a priority. We hope all guests share this philosophy.

The program will wrap up at 12:00 noon. Guests will then have access to the Conservation Area to enjoy from 12:00 PM – 2:30 PM. There are picnic areas and walking trails along the Riviere l’Acadie. The habitat attracts Spiny Softshell Turtles, Red Winged Blackbirds, deer, fox and other wildlife. An historic barn also sits on the property with outside picnic tables. We encourage Symposium guests to bring a lunch with them to enjoy in this beautiful area.

We look forward to seeing you at Fauna Foundation!

Make It A Day

Add a Birdwatching Event for the whole Fauna Experience

All of our Sanctuary Symposiums coincide with Fauna Birdwatching events. To experience the Fauna Sanctuary as a whole, we suggest signing up for both events. All of our Birdwatching events are bilingual.

For those who are attending both Birdwatching and Sanctuary Symposium events on the same day, you will begin your birdwatching walk at the scheduled time, then be guided toward the office building at 9:45 AM for the Symposium, and resume your walk from 1:00 PM – 2:15 PM.
