Fauna online classes and virtual events for in‑depth knowledge

Introducing the all new Fauna online classes and virtual events! Join us as we dive deep into topics such as chimpanzee behaviour and communication, wildlife, husbandry, caregiving and sanctuary protocols, ethics, and conservation. These will be interactive classes featuring guest speakers and renown educators who are experts in their fields, with a key focus on primates.

Class sizes will be limited to allow for plenty of one-on-one instructor time. Be sure to make your reservations quickly. We will be offering a variety of online classes and virtual events periodically throughout the year, so check back here frequently for an updated schedule.

Online Course

Understanding Chimpanzee Behaviour

Join us for an online course exploring the science of understanding chimpanzee behaviour and its application to improve conditions in captivity. Topics include:

  • Fundamentals of chimpanzee natural history and behavior
  • Elements of chimpanzee behavior and contexts
  • Communication & Sign language studies
  • Environmental enrichment
  • Diet
  • Husbandry protocols in sanctuary settings
  • Ethics
  • Use in research
  • Basic data collection

This is a 3-week course offered July 12–30, 2021. The format will include synchronous and asynchronous activities with no requirement for synchronous participation. Cost is CAD$ 250.

This course will be taught by Mary Lee Jensvold, Ph.D. Fauna Associate Director and Primate Communication Scientist, and co-hosted by Friends of Washoe.
