Tips for making the switch to a vegetarian diet

The best bets for finding vegetarian food are in international restaurants. Italian, Chinese, Vietmanese, Lebanese, Mexican and Indian restaurants all offer a variety of vegetarian dishes.

If you're concerned about getting the proper amount of vitamins in your diet, be sure to eat plenty of green leafy veggies and lots of fruit. For example, Bok Choy (Chinese cabbage) has as much calcium as a glass of milk and doesn't have the levels of saturated fat that cow's milk does. (Read more about milk in this PCRM article Milk: No Longer Recommended or Required at www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/milk.html .)

Ask for it! Even restaurants that don't offer vegetarian entrees can usually whip up a meatless pasta or vegetable plate if you ask. (Call ahead of time. Even a French cuisine chef will prepare a wonderful meal, if given plenty of notice.) If you are attending a catered affair, catch the waiter before you are served and ask him or her to remove the chicken breast from your plate and slip on an extra baked potato. Airlines offer vegetarian meals as well. Request this when booking your ticket. When ordering a pizza, hold the cheese and add extra veggies and sauce!

There are plenty of helpful vegetarian and vegan cookbooks on the market. Refer to our recommended reading section for suggestions. Also, there are some products we'd like to recommend to first timers, to help you get started. Please refer to our Vegan Resources below.
